The Friends for Seniors program works to restore spirits heavy with loneliness by recruiting, training, and supporting volunteers to visit with isolated older adults in our community. Friends for Seniors visit one time per week to help their older friend by sharing time with them at their home or away, doing things they both enjoy such as visiting, sharing a meal, shopping, seeing a movie, writing letters and more.
Friends for Seniors' volunteers benefit because they have the opportunity to give as well as receive friendship, learn to know an interesting person, share life stories and feel they are doing something worthwhile.
How does it work?
- Older adults in Wyandotte County are referred to the program by home care workers, hospital social workers, ministers, neighbors, family members, or older persons themselves.
- Friends for Seniors staff will then make a home visit with the older adult to discuss their interests and what type of volunteer they would like to have.
- After volunteers are screened and trained, staff will help them select an older friend. They also help the volunteer meet their friend.
- Friends for Seniors staff will monitor the activities monthly and are available for help throughout the match.
Eligibility - Friends for Seniors program is free when you are:
- Age 60 or over
- A resident of Wyandotte County
- Are willing to have a visitor and participate in the match
